A controversial wrongful death suit in a small town is the backdrop to AFF alum Brian Jun’s The Thacker Case, the follow-up to his 2006 festival hit Steel City. When the body of Kevin Thacker is discovered behind the police station after he is brought in for drunk driving, the stories simply don’t add up to the accidental death the police claim. His parents bring a young attorney onto the case to try to find justice for their son. Jun’s feature has a new take on the classic courtroom procedural, mixing in the gritty realism of New Hollywood with a moving family story.

though many a story of attorney vs. the system has been done, this one was a remarkable rendering for me. I don't know if it was because it happened right here in the Heartland, but it engaged me from the beginning. I CARED about the young attorney, his young family, the victim and his parents. Not one scene was too long or unnecessary. Each provided a gradual tightening of the anticipation screws until the jury's decision. The blip of the overturned verdict but ultimate success of the appeal was justice at its best. Solid acting, directing and editing in this superb film.
